Project overview

Sydney Civil is working to improve George Street between Hunter Street and Essex Street, Sydney as well as selected side streets as part of the George Street North pedestrianisation project.

We will install new granite paving, upgrade the stormwater drainage, install new trees and street furniture to make the pedestrian boulevard on George Street more accessible to people.

George Street was closed to vehicles between Hunter and Bridge/Grosvenor Streets in January 2023 and between Bridge/Grosvenor and Essex streets in July 2023.

The area was temporarily converted into a brightly coloured space with seats to support local businesses and for people to enjoy.

What to expect during construction work

Sydney Civil will take steps to minimise potential impacts during construction works. However, there will be machinery noise, temporary restrictions to vehicle parking, temporary closures/detours and temporary alternative pedestrian access.

Please follow the direction of signage and traffic controllers.

Access to all businesses will remain open with footpath access during the construction works.

Sydney Civil will continue to communicate with impacted properties in advance regarding temporary driveway or access changes.

The safety of our communities, residents and staff is our top priority. Thank you for your patience while we complete these important works.

When will we be working

Construction work is carried out generally during the following times:

  • Day works from 7:30am to 4:30pm Mondays to Saturdays.
  • Night works will be required at Curtin Place (select nights) from 7:00pm to 5:00am, as well as night works during Light Rail non-operational hours (select nights) from 12:30am to 3:00am. Light Rail services will not be operating during these times.

If there is wet weather or other delays, our team will try to start the work the next day. If unsuitable weather continues, we will update this webpage and email information about any changes to our schedule.

We will aim to minimise night works as much as possible, however, if they are necessary, we will provide notification in advance to nearby residents and businesses.
